Primary teeth, also called baby teeth, are eventually replaced by permanent teeth. Many people do not realize that they are in fact very important for a child’s long-term dental health. Normally, some of the primary teeth remain in the mouth until a child is eleven or twelve years old. During this time the primary teeth serve as space maintainers and ensure that the permanent teeth are properly aligned as they grow into the mouth. Early loss of primary teeth often cause misalignment of the permanent teeth and may even alter normal facial development. Orthodontic solutions may be necessary to correct these problems. Cavities and tooth loss can make it impossible for a child to eat properly which affects their overall level of health. Speech development can also be affected by premature loss. In combination these problems may lower a child’s self-esteem during their important formative years.
Bottle syndrome, also called baby bottle tooth decay, is a serious condition that can destroy your child’s teeth. It occurs when teeth are exposed to liquids that contain sugar for long periods of time. The liquid pools around the teeth and gums. An acid is produced when the sugar is consumed by the bacteria present in the mouth. This acid attacks your child’s teeth and causes decay. Your child’s teeth are vulnerable to decay from the moment they break through the gums. Bottle syndrome can cause infection which may result in having to remove teeth.
To prevent bottle syndrome begin cleaning your child’s teeth as soon as they erupt by wiping teeth and gums with a clean, damp cloth or a very soft infant toothbrush after each feeding. If your child takes a bottle to bed, or needs the comfort of a bottle for long periods during the day, put only water in the bottle, or switch to a pacifier. Begin flossing your child’s teeth daily when all primary teeth have come in, usually around age two. Have their teeth examined by a dentist every six months.
